Bear Attacks of the Century Bear Attacks of the Century by Larry Mueller and Marguerite Reiss is a 6x9 inch, soft covered, 192 printed paged book retailing for $16.95 at bookstores or from The Lyons Press 246 Goose Lane, Guilford, CT 06437 phone 800-243-0495. The joint authors of this book have put together some startling, reveling and informative facts on wild bear attacks. This book contains over a dozen stories of unbelievable human courage driven by the will to survive and the courage to fight off an attack by an animal often 3 to 4 or as much as 5 times their victim’s physical weight and the immeasurable strength of the bear.. These stories have been told first person to the authors in great detail and have been followed up with detail research for additional facts. There are stories about when guns failed to work, companions panicked and ran away. It is a book of modern day bear attacks by decedents of an animal that has been hunting and attacking man since man prowled this earth in a semi-vertical position and called home a mountain cave. Now man feels they have turned the tables enough to hunt these magnificent beasts with bows and arrows sometimes only to become a statistic as they were hundreds of years ago and not a victor they set out to be These are not stories that have been sensationalized. These are detailed stories of the horrible bear attacks on humans as they happened and were retold by the victims to the authors. This book contains sound advice on avoiding bear conflicts and attacks that allow both the bear and possible victim to both walk away unscathed. We rarely read stories of close encounters of people who walk away from potential bear attacks but they happen frequently and go unreported. This is a book that should be read by hunters, hikers, nature students, back country campers, etc or in fact by any visitors to bear country no matter the bear species. “You may never encounter or even see a bear, but always keep in mind you are in the bears back yard and that they can be one of the most cantankerous animals on this planet if they are having a bad day or believe you have them cornered.” In over 60 years of hunting and fishing I had 2 close bear encounters, both I wish never happened. This book is a good read. It is a book of true stories not bears fiction stories. It is a must read if you spend time in bear country especially Grizzly country. |
