CHRISTMAS BOOKS

The November December issue of New Hampshire Wildlife is the annual deer hunting and Christmas issue for this column. We will concentrate on Christmas.

A majority of the sportsmen and outdoor acquaintances that I am friendly with are also readers and collectors of fine sporting books. For these outdoor enthusiasts a good book is just like being afield or at the club shooting range. So for the outdoor person on your Christmas list who likes to hunt or fish or spends time outdoors birding, snow shoeing or inside tying a few flies and who are hard to buy for you might consider a book that encompasses their interests.

If that special person on your list is into serious book collecting or like deer hunting, migratory bird hunting, Atlantic salmon fishing, fly tying, etc. you might want to contact some of the major publishers of outdoor sporting books and request a copy of their latest catalog. It might be a good idea to inquire if they also have gift certificates to go with the catalog. A few of America s better publishers of outdoor sporting books are as follows: Voyageur Press, 123 North Second Street, Stillwater, MN 55082-5002 phone 1-800-327-2210, Country-Sport Press, PO Box 679 Camden, ME 04843 phone 1-800-685-7962,Globe Pequot Press, 246 Goose Lane, PO Box 246, Guilford, CT 06437-0480 phone 1-800-243-0495, Willow Creek Press, PO Box 147, Minocqua, WI 54548 phone 1-800-850-9453, Krause Publications, 700 East State Street, Iola, WI 54990-0001 phone 1-800-258-0929, Countryman Press, PO Box 748, Woodstock, VT 05091 phone 1-800-245-4151 and last but not least Stoeger Publishing Co., 17603 Indian Head Hwy. Suite 200 Accokeek, MD 20607 phone 1-877-486-2665.

My favorite location for old, out-of-print books is ABE Books. You go on line to www.abebooks.com and you will be amazed at the number of great old books you can find on this web site.

Some recently published books that could make your favorite sportsman excited on Christmas morning. The Complete Book of Dutch Oven Cooking by J. Wayne Ferry from Stoeger Publications is a 128 paged, hard-covered book, complete with special recipes and Dutch Oven know how for camping or the home fireplace. This book is also highly illustrated. It has been many years since I have cooked using a Dutch Oven over a bed of white and red hot coals but there was a time. In fact they were great times. This book could be a rare find for the outdoor cook who likes to cook over an open camp fire. The books lists for $24.95 at bookstores or sporting good stores or direct from Stoeger Publishing whose address and phone number is listed above.

Voyager Press has hit the Christmas book jackpot with two recently published great books just in time for the holidays. The Fly-Fishing Anthology is a book edited by the editor of Voyager Press. It is a hard-covered book that is 9 < x 10 inches, 192 pages with 170 photos and lists for $35.00. For the fly fisherman or angler on your list this is great anthology of American fly fishing history. I am about > of the way through my copy and I find it difficult to put down. The second new book is the Encyclopedia of Deer by world renowned wildlife photographer and naturalist Dr. Leonard Lee Rue III. It is an 8 = x 11 inch, hard-covered book with 160 pages along with 150 color or black and white photos. The book also contains 12 pages of range maps and lists for $35.00. This is an encyclopedia of all the world known species of deer. It is authored by one of the worlds best known and respected wildlife photographers. This book should make a great gift for the deer hunter on your list. It is available at most bookstores, on line or from Voyager Press.

Now for that waterfowler on your list. A new book from Krause Publications by M.D. Johnson entitled Successful Goose Hunting is a soft-covered book. It is 8 < x 10/7/8 inches and has 144 pages with 150 color photographs. M.D. Johnson is also the Minnesota state goose calling champion and a registered Minnesota guide. This is a book any goose hunter would be pleased to receive on Christmas morning. The book sells for $24.99 at bookstores or direct from Kruase Publications.

A great locally written and published book that any New Hampshire angler should find acceptable is Fishing in New Hampshire. This is a history written by Jack Noon and published by Moose Country Press. It is available from Moose Country Press, Warner, NH phone 1-800-346-6673.

There are two books for the gun enthusiasts and shooter on your list. First is the 2005 Edition #96 of Stoeger s Shooter s Bible. It is a book that is often referred to as the world standard firearm reference book. I would doubt very much if most of the world s better hunters and shooters don t have copies of this great reference book. I have been purchasing them for over 50 years. The companion book to the Shooter s Bible is the 27th edition of the Gun Traders Guide. It is also published by Stoeger Publishing Co. The Shooter s Bible 2005 lists for $24.95 and the gun Traders Guide 2005 also lists for $24.95. Any gun owner or collector would like to receive the latest edition of these publications. They are available at most sporting goods and bookstores or directly from Stoeger Press.

Enjoy the up coming holidays and give your favorite outdoor person a good book and a lasting Christmas present

Happy Holidays.
