Grouse Dog, A Professional Training Journal From Countrysport Press comes a great grouse hunting and grouse dog training book entitled Grouse Dog, A Professional Training Journal. This is a hard covered 6 x 9 inch, 176 paged book authored by Richard Weaver. Weaver is a professional upland dog breeder and pointing type dog trainer. He has trained more and 1,000 pointing dogs in his career especially his own breeding of Ryman-Type line of English Setters. He is also the featured speaker at countrywide dog training seminars on obedience, fieldwork, behavioral programs as well as a speaker on nutritional issues. To read this book is to grouse hunt with a dedicated grouse hunter; a very competent grouse dog trainer who shares with you his actual grouse hunting adventures and training tips as he hunts and works his dogs over wild birds. Any grouse hunter who is lucky enough to hunt over a fine grouse dog knows well the fact that the best way to train their grouse dog is over wild birds during the regular grouse hunting season. Weaver helps to perfect this theory for you as he explains in detail the right approach to the dog on point and the eventual flush on every wild bird he encounters. He then critiques what went right or wrong with the flush and any mistakes the dog made if any mistakes were observed. This isn’t just another dog training book it is a combination of a hunter’s journal and a grouse dog training book. It is a grouse dog training book that has been written as an enjoyable upland hunting story being told by an informed writer and a great grouse hunting dog trainer. We all know good grouse dogs are different from other bird dogs and old time bird dog trainer and writer George Bird Evans explains it this way in his book Trouble with Bird Dogs : I don’t think a dog can excel on every species of game bird, no dog can handle the Hawthorn and grapevine tangles like the dog in whose brain ruffed grouse are a fever “ Grouse Dog was published last November so copies of the book should be available at better bookstores at a cost of $28.95 or directly from the publisher Countrysport Press, Camden ME, at www.countrysportpress.com or by phone at 1-800-685-7962.
