Holding Ground

Holding Ground by Samuel Lucy is a 176 paged, hard covered book published by Countrysport Press, Camden, Maine and it lists of $23.00. This book is available at better bookstores or direct from the publishers at 1-800-685-7962, also on their web site at www.countrysportpress.com

Sam Lucy writes about 30 years of upland bird and duck hunting. He is now a resident of Winthrop, Washington but he first cut his hunting teeth hunting grouse with a 16ga shotgun, no doubt a model 311, on his family’s 6th generation farm here in New Hampshire. Lucy, like most hunters is a dog man and this book of short stories is about hunters and their dogs. The author writes about adventures with Labs, setters and Brittany’s. Lucy’s works have appeared in Gray’s Sporting Journal and Shooting Sportsman magazines.

Holding Ground is his first book. He is a dedicated hunter who observes beauty is all that he sees from sunrise to snowstorms, to blue cold, windy days and all the unknown that is just over every hill. He is a writer who quickly grabs you and brings you into his story.

I find one fault with his writing and for me it is just a personal fault. It seems that in all his dog stories that when the dogs reach the end of their hunting years they must be put down with a shotgun by the owners in a special place the dog enjoyed hunting. Maybe it is because I am not as strong as the author or see my dogs in a different light. I find the vets needle a hell-of- a-lot more humane than a bullet from a gun. The price for that I gladly pay for the life time of admiration, love and companionship that has been provided by any hunting dog. Don’t allow these comments to distract you from a well written book about a hunter and his dogs. The author loved his dogs no less than I have loved mine. We just differ greatly on the final ending.
