May-June Book Reviews

The latest book, that is almost an entire library in itself, is the 2005 edition of The Standard Catalog of Firearms. This is the 15th edition of this collector’s price and reference guide written by Ted Schwing and others and published by Krause Publications Company, Ioln, WI.

This book contains over 7.000 photographs on the world’s various guns from collectable antiques to modern collectable firearms and the latest in sporting firearms. There are detailed accounts on more than 25.000 models of guns and over 110,000 accurate prices of various firearms. This book is 3 ½ x 11 x 3 inches thick and has 1504 pages with a list price of $34.99. This book should be available now at better bookstores or direct from the publishers Krause Publications, 700 East State Street, Iola, WI 54990-0001 phone 1-800-258-0929.

For me this book has become very addictive. Every time I get near it I always end up picking it up and an hour or so later I end up putting it down. This is a great book for collectors or just your everyday gun fancier. A fun book to have around.

Beast of Never, Cat of God is authored by Bob Butz and published by The Lyons Press, Guilford, CT. In New Hampshire today, similar to the story location in northern Michigan and other sections of the east, there is a great interest in the so-called survival of the wild Eastern Mountain Lion. There is renewed interest and often heavy, heated debates and arguments amongst believers and non-believers alike. Some from people in the professional wildlife management community, other reliable naturalists and just self-educated students of the Eastern Mountain Lion phenomenon.

I am old enough to remember the coyote versus the so-called “coy dog” debate and how that carried on for years. This debate is now settled. New England now has a viable population of eastern coyote not “coy dogs”. I have read about and have played a part in the Gray Wolf re-introduction debate here in New Hampshire and New England. This is a great debate that is still taking place today. Do I believe Gray Wolves have started to re-populate northern New England? Yes, I do and as I stated since I first debated the re-introduction issue some 15 to 20 years ago “Set the table and they will come”. They will not have to be re-introduced. That table has now been set in our three northern New England states. These states have a thriving moose population and nature tells us the wolf is the natural predator of the moose.

I know very little about the Eastern Mountain Lion debate but I continue to read on this subject when I come across a book about the subject. This new book Beast of Never, Cat of God is this type of a book. As has often been the case with most of the not so glamorous and secretive wildlife species that some perceive to be a threat to man, little time or money is ever spent on a documentary study for these species.

This book is a thought provoking account of this yes or no question being asked about the existence of the Eastern Mountain Lion in northern Michigan. This often asked yes or no question is most times answered with a not so scientific and non-professional answer when it is asked of the responsible state agencies or often times goes unanswered.

Although this book is written around accounts in northern Michigan it could very well be some of the same questions being asked about large sections of undeveloped land between Concord and the Canadian border. Today there is a similar debate being carried out by a few in New England’s wildlife and scientific communities both in the public and private entities.

If you have any interest in the mystery surrounding another not so glamorous animal like the wolf and coyote you might find this book an enjoyable read. Beast of Never, Cat of God is a hard-covered 5 x 9 inch, 280 glossy paged book. It can be purchased at bookstores or direct from the publisher The Lyons Press, 246 Goose Lane. PO Box 430, Guilford, CT 06437 phone 1-800-962-0973.

Home Gunsmithing Sight Systems is the first in a new series of gunsmithing DVD’s being distributed by Stoeger Publishing Company, Accukeek MD. I have viewed this 60-minute video twice.

As the information list detailed on the package box relates it contains a lot of factual information on sight systems and the mounting of these systems. Did I enjoy looking at this copy? Yes, because it explains nicely the ins and outs of gun sights, how they are installed, how guns are bore sighted, etc. The video accomplishes this nicely.

I have a mechanical background in machine shop and machine shop practice from my younger years. Would I attempt to install, drill and tap sight holes on my Browning BAR 7 mm Mag. Not on your life! The video concept on how to do this is fine but without the precision tools, a shop grade drill press and the required drill jig complete with drilling and tapping bushings, not on my gun!

There is no doubt available somewhere in the gunsmithing tool market an adjustable gun sight boring jig or tool for sale but without a precision jig I could use on my floor model drill press I would still have to say not on my gun..

Don’t interpret this criticism to mean the entire video is wrong. It is a great how-to-do video especially if your gun has been pre-drilled and tapped for a telescopic sight. The rest of the information is very useful.

The video is available at some gun shops or direct from Stoeger Publishing, 17603 Indian Hill Hwy,.Suite 200, Accukeek, MD 20607 or phone 301-283-6300. The DVD lists for $19.95 and is titled Home Gunsmithing Sight systems.
