Rifle in Hand by Jim Posewitz Rifle in Hand is a new book from Riverbend Publishing, Helena, MT. Rifle in Hand, from the view point of this reviewer, again confirms the fact that there was no greater American conservationist than our former president Theodore Roosevelt nor an author who promotes and protects the American sportsman’s rights to free and open hunting than Jim Posewitz the author of Rifle in Hand. You may have read reviews of his other two books Inherit the Hunt and Beyond Fair Chase (Globe Pequot Press, Guilford, CT. www.globe-pequot.com ) in prior columns and now his latest publication Rifle in Hand. How Wild America Was Saved has been published by Riverbend Publishing, PO Box 5833, Helena MT 59604. Rifle in Hand is a soft covered, 8 ˝ x 5 ˝ inch book with 111 pages. As in his other books Posewitz again writes about hunting in America, its current problems and its future. American hunters have no greater champion for open land public hunting than author Jim Posewitz. He writes about protecting your right to hunt and the protection of open lands to do it on. Everyone who purchases a hunting license should read this book to know just what has been accomplished to provide you with this right and what you should continue to do to protect this right and America’s hunting heritage. Posewitz, in this book, writes about other America’s hunter conservationists and their lifelong battle to protect and save our wildlife and hunting. First and foremost are Theodore Roosevelt, Aldo Lepold, George Perkins Marsh, Alfred Aldrich Richardson and Jay D. Darling. They were the pioneers who worked to protect what we have today and is so often taken for granted Peter Wild, hunter, conservationist and author wrote and Posewitz quotes in this book “We do not intend that our natural resources shall be exploited by the few against the interest of the many. Our aim is to preserve our natural resources for the public as a whole for the average man and average woman who make up the body of the American people.” Posewitz then goes on to say in his own words “Challenges to hunting are real. Honoring the principles of fair chase, maintaining the public trust in wildlife management and protecting our wild places will be difficult. However this must be our agenda and we must engage the issues with intellectual energy and physical vigor.” These statements are moving and profound ones that must continue to be acted upon by you and me if we are to see public hunting survive for our children and grandchildren. This book is available from Riverbend Publishing, Helena, MT 59604 at a cost of $9.95 plus shipping, from www.riverbendpublishing.com or by phone 1-866-787-2369 Book Report by Bill Carney - May 2006
