Rooster: A Tribute to Pheasant Hunters in North America My life long pursuits of hunting, fishing, shooting etc. have also turned me into a collector of outdoor sports books. Good outdoor books capture my attention almost as much as the fish, animals and the adventures these book are written about. A couple of recently published books, great books, have been passed my way during the past two months. First was Rooster A Tribute to Pheasant Hunters in North America. This is a coffee table book with breath taking photography taken by master outdoor photographer Dale C. Spartas. The Book’s photography is complemented with outstanding stories written by some of America’s best outdoor writers, Michael McIntosh, Ron Spomer, Michael Furtman, Mark Herwig, and others. It is distributed by Riverbend Publishing Co., PO Box 5833, Helena, MT 59604, phone 1-866-787-2363. The book retails for $39.95. It was published in 2003 and is a 9 ½ x 12 ½ inch, hard covered book with 128 pages along with 160 of the most exquisite pheasant and pheasant hunting photographs ever published in one book. The cover photograph on this book is worth the price of the book. For an autographed and/or inscribed copy of Rooster contact Dale C. Spartas, Bozeman, MT 59771 phone 1-406-585-2244. I can still recall shooting my first wild pheasant over 60 years ago. It was in Essex, MA in the edge growth between the salt marsh and an upland corn field. I shot it with a used Sears Roebuck single shot shotgun that cost me $5.00. I can remember it today as if it happened only yesterday. If you have ever hunted pheasant, especially over a good pheasant hunting dog, this book is like a revisit of your pheasant hunting past. The author takes the readers from our small New England pheasant covers to the huge grain farm ranches and conservation preserve lands of the pheasant Mecca of mid and northwest America. This book details the advise of several of the country’s leading outdoor writers who write on pheasant dogs, guns, ammo and the pheasant hunting strategies used to successfully hunt this gaudy but magnificent game bird. This book also explains in historic detail the beginning and the significant strides made by Pheasants Forever, the national pheasant organization for pheasant hunters. If only New England had these wide open lands and the miles and miles of grain and corn fields. Unfortunately, New Hampshire is 90% forested and this forested land provides some great grouse and woodcock hunting, but there is just something special about wide open corn fields and pheasant hunting.
