Tying and Fishing the Fly Patterns of Bob Clouser

From Clouser flies to grouse dog training to hunting heritage make up this issues review.
Clouser’s Flies, Tying and Fishing the Fly Patterns of Bob Clouser is a hard covered, 184 paged, 8 ˝ x 11 inch fly tying book. It is authored by renowned fly-tier and creator of the Clouser, Bob Clouser and it is published by Stackpole Books. It is a first person accounting of the design by the old master himself of the ever popular Clouser Deep Water Minnow. This book contains 650 color photos and 2 color illustrations.
The book is Bob Clouser’s own guide to tying his Clouser Deep Water Minnow, Purple Darter, EZ Popper, the Rattle Clouser and many other of his famous patterns. Many anglers believe the Clouser flies to be strictly for saltwater use but his flies are designed to catch smallmouth, pike, red fish, trout and ever carp so this is just not a fly-tying book for saltwater flies. Clouser’s book contains the recipes for 17 of his most famous and popular creations along with instructions on choosing the best hooks, thread, eyes, glue and natural and synthetic fibers to tie the perfect fly.
World famous fly fisherman, rod designer and master fly casting instructor Lefty Kreh states “His Clouser Deep Minnow is undoubtedly the most popular fly pattern to be developed in the last several decades” and he goes on the say “This book is one of the most useful published in some time”.
I personally can recall when a couple of Clouser minnows saved a fishless Atlantic Salmon fishing trip in the wilds of northern Quebec from being a complete salmon washout. Jack Fallon and I were up on the George River fishing for Atlantic Salmon and as salmon fishing can sometimes be they were impossible to find. Fallon found a couple of Clouser flies in his gear and said let’s go see if we can entice a couple of lakers. For the next three hours, in the deep waters of a slow moving cove on the river, we caught , on these two Clouser’s, six to eight pound lakers on almost every cast until the flies were fish chewed to almost bare hooks.
This book is now available at most bookstores or it can be purchased directly from Stackpole Books, Mechanicsboro, PA or on the web at www.stackpolebooks.com or by calling 1-800-732-3669. It was released in January 2006 at a cost of $39.95 or by phone 1-866-787-2369
